Date
Mon, Oct 26, 2020 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm

Description

Speaker:  Prof. Peter Shawhan of UMCP’s Experimental Gravity Group

Title: "LIGO's Ordinary and Exceptional Gravitational-Wave Events".

Prof. Shawhan has been a UMD faculty member since 2006, and is also a Fellow of the Joint Space-Science Institute.  He has held numerous leadership positions within the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC).  Prof. Shawhan currently serves as Observational Science Coordinator for LIGO and is a member of the LSC Management Team.  He is also doing research in superconducting gravity gradiometer sensors and in gamma-ray astrophysics.

This is a guest lecture in Bei-Lok Hu's Phys 675/475 so it will have more pedagogical flavor, from LIGO to data analysis to recent observed astrophysical events.  ALL ARE WELCOME!
