Paul So, who received his doctorate in Physics at UMD in 1995, is an associate professor at George Mason University and an accomplished artist. In March, he established the Yuen Sang and Yu Yuen Kit So Endowed Professorship in non-linear dynamics, honoring his parents and his Ph.D. advisor, Distinguished University Professor Ed Ott. Ott will hold the professorship, and upon his retirement, his name will be added to the endowment to recognize his excellence and mentorship in non-linear dynamics.

Particle theorist Raman Sundrum has been named a Distinguished University Professor. He will be recognized at the Faculty and Staff Convocation Tuesday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel.

Associate Professor Victor Galitski has received the 2011 Richard A. Ferrell Distinguished Faculty Fellowship, which recognizes outstanding personal effort and expertise in physics as well as dedicated service to the UMD Department of Physics. The Fellowship, established in 2001, honors Dr. Richard A. Ferrell, a deeply-respected physicist who joined the University in 1953, served 40 years, and remained active in the department even after his retirement. Dr. Ferrell died in 2005 at his nearby University Park home.

Professor Galitski is a condensed matter theorist, a member of the Center for Nanophysics and Advanced Materials (CNAM) and a fellow of the Joint Quantum Institute.
