NIST Awards UM $15.5 Million in Stimulus Funds for Fellowships

College Park, Md. -- The U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced Friday that it is awarding $15.5 million to the University of Maryland to develop and implement a national NIST measurement science and engineering fellowship program. The new fellowship program was funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Johnpierre Paglione Receives NSF CAREER Grant

Johnpierre Paglione was awarded a NSF CAREER grant for MilliKelvin Magnetic Field-Angle-Resolved of Quantum Materials. His goal is to develop an experimental platform capable of probing the symmetry and anisotropic nature of quantum materials by measuring heat capacity and other thermal properties in large fully rotatable magnetic fields and at temperatures approaching absolute zero.

Satindar Mohan Bhagat Creator of Zero-Rupee Note

Satindar Mohan Bhagat was mentioned in the Economist Magazine January 28 and several other publications this past week. Professor Bhagat created the zero-rupee note, in 2001, to fight petty corruption in India.
