Title: Hybrid continuous-discrete variable quantum computing on trapped-ion platforms

Abstract: Trapped-ion platforms are a leading candidate for quantum computing and simulation, owing to their long coherence times and well-controlled spin degrees of freedom. In addition to their spins, trapped ions host bosonic motional modes that arise from the interaction between the ions' Coulombic repulsions and the trapping potential. Although these motional modes are normally used in an auxillary fashion to mediate entanglement between spins, recent works have used the motion to engineer dissipation and actively store and manipulate quantum information. Using the motion in this manner greatly extends the capabilities of trapped-ion systems and is a natural way to implement hybrid continuous-discrete variable quantum computing, where computation is performed on both qubits and oscillator modes. In this talk, I will describe recent works that have used the motional modes for this purpose, as well as future potential experiments.
