AI in Science
Description
People from around campus talk about how they use AI. Two 20 minute talks. The audience is mostly physics, math, CS.  This week features Perrin Ruth (Math) and the second speaker is Artem Chernikov (Math)
Among other things, Perrin Ruth's work models giant molecules in hydrocarbon pyrolysis.
Title: An AI-assisted combinatorial proof
Abstract: This talk is largely motivated by the recent advances in AI towards proving mathematical theorems. As an experiment, I handed Claude a small conjecture with reasonable but unproven confidence that it is true. The conjecture is in graph theory. Consider a basis of the cycle space of a graph. From this basis construct a higher order dual graph whose nodes are basis cycles and edges are pairs of cycles that share nodes. The claim is that the cycles (of cycles) in this dual graph are generated by triangles. We use this to inform the structure of ring clusters in chemical data. In this talk, I will briefly motivate this problem, then I will summarize my rocky but overall successful experience proving this result with Claude.
