The idea of the Hagedorn Spectrum, suggested in 1965 by Rolf Hagedorn, a theorist at CERN, has had wild ride over the years. It has influenced many parts of high-energy physics, from Quantum Chromodynamics to string theory. Strangely enough, analyses based on the Hagedorn spectrum sometimes yielded wrong conlusions, but nevertheless led to progress. This talk will explore some of this intellectual history, including the prediction of the quark-gluon plasma, and the birth of string theory and discuss the current status of Hagedorn's conjecture.
